Healthy Halloween Snacks for Kids

With the idea of keeping the tricks to a minimum and treats to a maximum, fitting in "healthy" can sometimes be a challenge. Healthy Halloween snacks can be quite easy with a little imagination. If you are tired of the same old caramel apples and candy corn, try some ghoulish treats that will keep your kids coming back for more. Creating Halloween snacks is not hard when you first find a theme.

Graveyard Theme

Using graham crackers, glue four half graham cracker sheets together with peanut butter. Spread a thin layer of peanut butter on the front of the cracker stack and write "RIP" in dried fruit bits.

For another spooky treat, using a slice of whole-wheat bread and a ghost-shaped cookie cutter, press the cookie cutter into the bread and remove the excess bread. Spread peanut or almond butter over the ghost. Sprinkle the top with fresh coconut and place two raisins at the top for the eyes.

Mummy Theme

Mummies are a given at Halloween, and mummy snacks are fun. Cut six all-beef or turkey hot dogs in half. Using pre-made bread stick dough, wrap the hot dogs as you would a mummy, leaving a small area one-fourth of an inch from the top to make eyes. Bake as required on the dough package. Place two tiny spots of mustard for eyes.

For another mummy treat, pull apart a stick of string cheese and wrap a carrot or celery stalk from top to bottom, ensuring that the vegetables are dry before adding the cheese. You also can wrap cheese around bread sticks and pretzel rods.

Jack-o-Lanterns

Using the Halloween theme of pumpkins and Jack-o-Lanterns, these snacks are cute and healthy, too. For the first snack, use a large orange, remove the top in the same way you would a pumpkin. Using a paring knife, remove the core of the orange. Make small cutouts for the eyes, nose and mouth.Fill the orange with dried fruit pieces, blueberries, strawberries or berry compote. Place the oranges on a bed of dark spinach leaves and sprinkle a few plastic spiders around the leaves. For a larger version, core a honeydew or cantaloupe. Fill with green and red grapes and cherries or a variety of vegetable chunks and cherry tomatoes.

Body Parts

Fruits and vegetables make excellent body parts for Halloween snacking. For a scary set of fingers, cut five cheese sticks in half length-wise. Using a paring knife, make small, shallow slices on one side to resemble finger joints. Add a small piece of red or green pepper to make the finger nail. Stick them in a small bowl of black bean hummus for a truly ghoulish effect.

To make creepy green eyeballs, using a melon ball tool and a honeydew melon, scoop out several melon balls. Push a raisin into the top of each ball, and place them all in a dark glass bowl, raisins facing up.
