Working out with music is an effective way to improve your performance. Without music, it's easy to get bored and lose track of how intensely you are exercising. With the right kind of music, you can set a steady workout pace by exercising to the rhythm. The key to selecting effective music is to choose the right tempo. Dance music and many rock songs typically have tempos between 120 and 140 beats per minute, making them suitable for most aerobic workouts. While tempo is important, it's equally important to choose music that entertains and motivates you as well.

Step 1

Use music that matches the spirit and tempo of your exercise routine. Create a playlist of energetic, fast-paced songs for intense cardiovascular workouts, such as jogging or bicycling. Songs with slower tempos and soothing melodies are suitable for yoga workouts and stretches.

Step 2

Tune into a radio station or Internet streaming site that provides suitable music if selecting your own music isn't possible.

Step 3

Use a portable music player or set up a sound system where you will be working out.

Step 4

Follow the beat of the music with your body movements to maintain a steady intensity during your workout. If you are bicycling, for instance, pedal at the same rate as the music's rhythm.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you're having trouble picking music, buy a workout music collection that matches your type of workout program. If your music player provides the option, create a different playlist for each of your workout routine; use one playlist for your cardiovascular workouts and another for your strength-training workouts. If you want to maintain a steady pace during your workout, don't exercise to music that features frequent tempo changes, such as jazz, or music that lacks a distinctive beat, such as classical. Instead, use music that has a steady, clear beat all the way through.
