If you are performing an aerobic exercise like jogging to lose weight, you're on the right path. According to David Robson of Body Building.com, in order to lose fat and in turn weight, you must do some form of aerobic exercise. The Cleveland Clinic adds that the primary purpose for aerobic exercise is to lose weight and improve cardiovascular fitness.

Calories and Weight Loss

A weight loss equation is pretty simple -- you must burn more calories than you take in to lose weight. According to MayoClinic.com, 3,500 calories is equal to 1 lb. of fat. That means that in order to lose a pound, you must somehow get rid of 3,500 calories. This can be done via diet, exercise or a combination of both. If you are simply planning to jog to lose weight then you must burn the calories while you are jogging.

About Calorie Burning

The amount of calories you burn when exercising has to do with the type of exercise, the intensity of the exercise and your size. According to MayoClinic.com, the larger you are in weight, the more calories you will burn by performing the same exercise as a smaller person. For example if a 200-pound man and a 150-pound man both play in a game of basketball and run the same amount, the 200-pound man will burn more calories. In addition, activites that require you to exert more will burn more calories. For example, sprinting will burn more calories than jogging.

Jogging and Calorie Burning

Jogging is a form of aerobic exercise and it is a more leisurely pace of running compared to sprinting or interval training. According to MayoClinic.com, in one-hour of jogging at a 5 mile per hour pace, a 160-lb. man will burn 584 calories, a 200-lb. man will burn 728 calories and a 240-lb. man will burn 842 calories. Therefore it would take a 200-lb. man about 4.8 hours or just under five hours to burn a full pound from just jogging at a five mile per hour pace.

Exercise Frequency

Because it takes extended amounts of exercise to burn enough fat and lose weight, spread your sessions out and gradually take the pounds off. The United States Department of Health and Human Services recommends at least 2 1/2 hours of moderate aerobic activity, like jogging, per week. You may have to increase the level and amount of exercise in order to burn more calories to lose weight.
