A distance of 292 on a treadmill can equal a couple of different measurements, depending on the features of your machine and how you have it set. A treadmill measures a distance in either miles or kilometers. Check the display carefully to determine what a reading of 292 equals on your machine.

Treadmill Distance

A treadmill measures distance based on how many times the belt turns around the deck. The belt runs at a specific speed and covers the length of the deck. Using these numbers, the treadmill calculates the distance you've covered and converts it to either miles or kilometers. Miles are the U.S. standard for measuring distance, while kilometers are the metric standard for measuring distance. Most treadmills can be set to either miles or kilometers.

Miles or Kilometers

One mile equals 1.61 kilometers. If you've set your treadmill to miles, then 292 equals 292 miles, which is 469.93 kilometers. If you've set it to kilometers, then 292 equals 292 kilometers, which is 181.44 miles. Treadmills sold in the U.S. typically default to miles. Treadmills sold in other countries typically default to kilometers.

Set Your Treadmill

You won't know whether a treadmill is set to miles or kilometers by looking at the console. It will just say "distance." On most models, you'll have to enter the information mode of the console to check whether it is set to kilometers or miles. The procedure for accessing the information mode varies among makes and models, so you'll need to check your owner's manual for instructions. An "E" in the distance setting represents English miles, and an "M" represents metric kilometers.

Considerations

A treadmill displays the information for your current workout on the console. Depending on the machine, you can sometimes pause the workout and continue within a limited amount of time. The treadmill saves your information and continues where you left off. However, if you work out on Monday, then again on Wednesday, the treadmill refreshes the console data. It is unlikely you traveled 292 miles or kilometers in one workout. Check where the decimal point is on the display. Treadmills typically show up to the tenth or hundredth place. In this case, 292 equals either 2.92 or 29.2 miles or kilometers.
