Diet and exercise are the most common ways a healthy individual loses weight. However, these are not the only way weight-loss occurs; many diseases and health conditions can also lead to weight loss. This type of weight loss is not welcomed and can have other serious health implications. If you experience sudden or unexplained weight loss, contact your physician.
Cancer
Weight loss can often be a symptom of cancer. But just because you are experiencing weight loss does not automatically indicate you have cancer. Other symptoms accompanied by weight loss that may be an indicator of cancer include fatigue, nausea, pain, abnormal bleeding, a lump, vomiting and lack of appetite.
Crohn's Disease
Crohn's disease is a condition of the gastrointestinal system. Weight loss is one symptom of Crohn's disease, which can also be coupled with chronic cramping and abdominal pain. If you have Crohn's disease, you may also experience fever, diarrhea, tachycardia, nausea, abdominal pain and abdominal distension. Some individuals with Crohn's disease may also notice a mass in the lower left or right portion of their abdomen.
Endocrine Disorders
Your body's endocrine system helps to regulate the hormones that regulate your bodily functions. Hormones are also responsible for abnormal weight loss. Examples of conditions of your endocrine system include diabetes and conditions of the thyroid, such as hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. Diabetes weight loss often occurs in conjunction with increased appetite, weakness and fatigue. Hyperthyroidism occurs as the result of an overactive thyroid releasing too much thyroid hormone into your system. This can cause your body's metabolism to speed up. Hypothyroidism is an underactive thyroid; it produces too little hormones and causes your body to use energy slowly.
Depression
Depression, anxiety and stress can all lead to weight loss. Weight loss may occur along with apathy, fatigue, feelings of worthlessness and anorexia. A depressed individual may be incoherent, indecisive or suicidal. Contact a doctor or a psychologist if you are experiencing any of these symptoms.
Medications
Medications for a wide variety of illnesses and conditions can have the side effect of weight loss. For more information on possible side effects of your current medications, read the instructions that came with your medicine or consult your doctor.
Kidney Disease
Kidney disease can take a toll on your body, causing weight loss as the result of nausea and vomiting. Individuals with kidney disease also have a tendency to lose protein through urination.
