Omega-3 supplements like fish oil have become increasingly popular as awareness of their health benefits has grown. You should keep a few things in mind when taking fish oil because there are some side effects and drawbacks. As with any vitamin or alternative therapy, you should check with your doctor before taking fish oil.

Significance

Fish oil is a good source of polyunsaturated fatty acids, primarily the omega-3 fatty acids docosahexaenoic, or DHA, and eicosapentaenoic or EPA. Omega-3 is considered an essential nutrient, which means your body needs omega-3 to function but cannot make the essential fatty acid, so it has to be obtained through food or supplements. Fish oil supplements are generally considered safe but have a few drawbacks.

Pros

Fish oil has been shown to help with heart disease in several ways. Fish oil reduces triglycerides, which are associated with heart disease. It may also help prevent heart disease. Omega-3 supplements like fish oil are also possibly effective in lowering blood pressure and helping with attention deficit disorder, menstrual pain, rheumatoid arthritis, inflammation, age-related macular degeneration, depression, asthma and many other disorders and conditions.

Fish oil is readily available in health food stores, large retail stores and even by prescription. A common suggested dose of fish oil is 1 to 4 g daily, however, your doctor can advise you of the proper amount for your individual needs. A 3.5 oz. serving of salmon or mackerel contains about 1 g of fish oil.

Cons

One of the biggest complaints about fish oil supplement is the bad taste and aftereffects. Many people are bothered by burping up a "fish taste" or a bloated feeling after taking fish oil. Keeping the supplements in the freezer reduces or eliminates the bad taste and aftereffects but does not alter the potency.

The National Library of Medicine notes that another drawback of fish oil supplements is they are probably not effective when taken for things like gum or liver disease, migraines, stomach ulcers or breast pain.

Fish oil is available in many different qualities. Be sure to purchase supplements that are free of heavy metals like lead and mercury. Check with your health care provider if you are unsure of the quality of your omega-3 supplement.

Considerations

Omega-3 fatty acids can increase the risk of bleeding, so they should only be taken under the supervision of a doctor if you have any kind of bleeding disorder. Taking more than 3 g of fish oil daily increases the risk of bleeding problems.
