Clip-on bicycle pedals refers to an extension to encase the foot and enhance speed. Another term for this form of the pedal is toe clip. Toe clips attach to the pedal to build an enclosure for the foot. The advantage of using a toe clip is added force. With a clipless pedal, you exert force only on the downward thrust. Toe clips allow force during the ascending arc when pedaling, as well. Proper technique when using a clip-on pedal is essential for stability and safety.
What Is Clip-on Pedal?
A clip-on pedal allows for installation of a toe clip or cage. It is not necessary to use a clip-on pedal when biking, but it does have some benefits, such as increased speed. Application of the toe clip to a clip-on pedal will depend on the design of the clip. Most slip over the end of the pedal and connect with a latch or screws. Toe clips come in varying lengths to accommodate different foot sizes. It is necessary to select a toe clip that fits your foot properly.
Safety
One disadvantage to a clip-on pedal is foot movement. The toe clip is meant to trap the foot onto the pedal. This is an advantage when riding, but if you need to stop suddenly, it can cause problems. Toe clips come with straps that work to keep the foot secure, but also allow for quick dismount if necessary. Start by placing your foot on one pedal and pulling it back out while the bike is parked. When you are comfortable with the feel of the clip, spend time riding in an open space, without obstacles or traffic.
Method
Website Bike-Manual suggests a flip method works best for clips. Mount the bike and turn one pedal over with your foot. The toe clip should face the ground. Crank the pedal around so it sits at the 2 o'clock position. After placing your foot on the turned pedal, slide it back to flip the pedal and move the foot forward to into the clip. Bike-Manuel describes the move as equivalent to scraping something off the bottom of your shoe. Push forward on the bike and start pedaling with one foot in the clip and one out. As you gain momentum, repeat the process to insert the free foot into the clip.
Stopping
Stopping is a significant problem with using a clip-on pedal. It is easy to catch your foot on the clip. To remove the foot from the clip, pull back slightly and raise your heel off the pedal surface. Slide the toe back farther until it clears the clip completely. If done incorrectly, you will lose your balance on the bike and fall. With practice, the withdrawal method will become second nature.
