Tamoxifen, also known by the brand name Soltamox, is used to treat breast cancer in both men and women. Tamoxifen is also administered to help lower the chance of breast cancer in women who are at high risk. Typically, 20mg of tamoxifen solution is taken daily for up to five years. As with any medication, tamoxifen has the potential for side effects.
Less Serious Side Effects
RxList.com indicates that the most common side effect of using tamoxifen are hot flashes. Other less common side effects are distaste for food, itching, depression, dizziness, light-headedness, headache, hair thinning, vaginal dryness, high blood calcium level and swelling.
Serious Side Effects
Per Drugs.com, serious side effects include sudden numbness or weakness, chest pain, shortness of breath, coughing up blood, unusual vaginal discharge, irregular menstrual periods, pelvic pressure and pain, fever, chills, body aches, easy bruising, new breast lumps, nausea, stomach pain, appetite loss, jaundice and dark urine. RxList.com warns of other issues like pale skin or clay-colored stools.
Complications
Some individuals may experience blood clots in the lungs, uterine cancer, strokes and an increased chance of developing cataracts. These effects are most common with extended use. The FDA warns against using tamoxifen during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, as it may cause fetal harm.
Allergic Reaction
Some individuals may experience an allergic reaction to tamoxifen. Signs of allergy include swelling of the mouth, swelling of the tongue, swelling of the lips and/or swelling of the throat. Chest pain and difficulty breathing may result. Patients should watch for early symptoms like hives or skin itching. Anaphylaxis is a serious type of allergic reaction that can be fatal if not treated with emergency medical care. It occurs when a person is unable to breath due to the constriction of airways.
Contraindications
Individuals should be sure their doctor is aware of all health concerns or medications before tamoxifen is prescribed. Drugs.com warns against using tamoxifen when certain health conditions, like liver disease, high cholesterol, a history of strokes or blood clots, exist.
