Freshwater fishing is a sport that can be readily enjoyed throughout the year, even through cold winters. Most fisherman look forward to the warmer months to fish, after the ice has thawed from the lakes and streams. If you are fishing veteran or someone who is looking to get started with the sport, there are certain supplies and gear you will need for a successful experience.

Rods

It is essential that you have the right rod or fishing pole. While most local fishing gear stores carry rods and gear pertinent to the surrounding area, you should still be on the lookout for certain characteristics. There is a difference between freshwater and saltwater fishing rods. Saltwater rods, reels and equipment tend to be larger and more more sturdy than freshwater counterparts. For freshwater fishing, you can choose between four basic designs, including fly-fishing, casting, spinning and trolling. A fly-fishing rod is an efficient choice for freshwater streams and lakes. It is lightweight and allows for pinpoint positioning of your fish bait. Spin and bait-casting rods are commonly used for freshwater fishing with the spin reel being on the bottom and the casting rod on the top. A trolling rod is a specific rod that attaches to a boat and allows you to lure fish while the boat is moving.

Reels

Having the right reel is equally as important as your rod. Reels hold and release your fishing line. They are mounted on the rod and also serve to retrieve your line and catch. There are a variety of reels based on your fishing needs and what type of fish you are trying catch. The centerpin reel is used in conjunction with a fly-fishing rod and is a choice among anglers and fishermen in rough and flowing rivers. Bait-casting reels are mounted above the rod and are made from brass, heavy metals or hard rubber. These reels work well for larger freshwater fish such as sturgeon and largemouth bass. Spinning, spin cast and underspin are other reels that should be part of your freshwater fishing supply.

Tackle

Having the right tackle in your fishing supply box is important. Tackle covers a broad range of supplies that you may need. Your box should include hooks, sinkers, spinner baits, jigs, fishing line, headlamps, spotlight, floats, net, lures, gaffs, traps and spears. A tackle box should also hold a knife or cutting equipment for your catch.

Bait

It is important to have the right bait. Certain fish are attracted to specific types of bait. For example, rock bass, which are found in the northeastern U.S. and southern Canada, prefer insects and other fish. Popular types of bait for freshwater fish include cut bait or other fish, insects, popper and fly bait, jigs, night crawlers, minnows, spinners, plugs and spoons.
