Claravis is the brand name under which the medication isotretinoin is marketed in Canada (in the United States it is marketed as Accutane). Isotretinoin is a type of chemical called a retinoid, which means that it is derived from vitamin A. It can be used to treat a severe form of acne called recalcitrant nodular acne. Because of its potency and its ability to cause birth defects and other serious side effects, Claravis is typically only used when other treatments (such as antibiotics) have been ineffective.
Common Side Effects
Most medications have the potential to cause some side effects, and Claravis is no exception. However, like most medications approved by the FDA, many of these side effects are relatively benign. One common side effect of taking Claravis is joint pain, often felt in the joints in the back (the vertebral joints). People taking Claravis may also experience certain mental effects, such as drowsiness, dizziness, and agitation or nervousness. Claravis may also cause the lips, nose, skin, and mouth to become dry, as well as cracking and peeling of the skin. Other adverse effects include changes in the color or texture of the nails on their fingers and toes.
Serious Side Effects
In some rare cases, Claravis can cause certain adverse effects that are serious and require immediate attention. You should contact your doctor if you experience any changes in your emotional state, such as depression, suicidal thoughts, hallucinations or sudden changes in mood or behavior. Also be alert for numbness or weakness on one side of your body, as well as blurred vision, especially if you experience blurred vision along with a sudden and severe headache localized behind your eyes. Other serious side effects including hearing problems, convulsions, nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain that spreads to your back, jaundice and severe loss of appetite. Claravis can also cause flu-like symptoms as well as a fever and purple spots appearing under your skin. Stop taking Claravis immediately if you experience any of these side effects and contact your doctor.
Claravis and Pregnancy
It is extremely important to not take Claravis while you are pregnant: Claravis can cause severe and life-threatening defects in an unborn child. These birth defects include problems with the fetus's ears, eyes and face, as well as more dangerous defects involving the heart, brain and skull. Consequently, any woman taking Claravis must have a negative pregnancy test within thirty days of starting Claravis, as well as get another negative pregnancy test every time the prescription is refilled. In addition, women taking Claravis must agree to use two forms of birth control (such as an intrauterine device along with condoms, or birth control pills combined with a diaphragm) while taking Claravis.
