Dibutasona is a prescription medication that is a combination of dexamethasone and phenylbutazone. It is no longer sold in the United States, partly because of the presence phenylbutazone, which is no longer approved for use in humans in the United States. However, some countries (such as Mexico) continue to sell this medication. It is typically used as an anti-inflammatory drug and can be used to treat conditions such as asthma and arthritis.
Dexamethasone Common Side Effects
Like many prescription medications, dexamethasone can cause certain side effects. However, many of these are relatively minor side effects and do not cause serious health risks. These can include sleeping disturbances (such as insomnia) and vertigo (a feeling of spinning around). Other patients may experience increased appetite and sweat more than usual. Other minor adverse effects include indigestion, mood swings and nervousness. If you experience any of these symptoms, continue taking dibutasona and contact your doctor if they persist for several weeks or if they become unbearable.
Serious Dexamethasone Side Effects
Some people are allergic to dexamethasone. For these people, taking dexamethasone can cause an allergic reaction with symptoms that vary from mild to very severe. Stop taking dibutasona immediately if you develop a rash or hives, experience swelling of your lips, tongue or face, or have difficulty breathing, swallowing or become hoarse, as these are all symptoms of an allergic reaction that may become life-threatening. Additionally, be on the lookout for some of the more severe side effects of dibutasona, which can include bloody diarrhea (either manifested as red blood in the diarrhea or black tarry stools). Some patients may also experience mental changes, such as depression, an exaggerated sense of well-being, muscle weakness, or increased pressure in their eyes. Other serious adverse effects include vomiting up blood (typically seen as "coffee-ground vomit), swelling of the limbs or face and sudden and unexplained weight gain, as well as joint and muscle pain or weakness.
Phenylbutazone Side Effects
Phenylbutazone is no longer sold in the United States for human consumption, partly due to its side effects. When taken by humans, it can cause gastrointestinal symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting and bleeding into the digestive system (leading to bloody diarrhea/vomit). It can also cause ringing in the ears (also known as tinnitus) and light sensitivity. Phenylbutazone can also cause low blood pressure, slowed breathing and many mental effects, including confusion, incoherence, dizziness, agitation, and drowsiness. In some cases, phenylbutazone use can lead to convulsions and a coma.
