According to legend, kundalini energy was a closely-held secret among advanced yoga practitioners until 1969, when Yogi Bhajan came to the United States and, in a gesture of compassion, divulged it to the rest of the world. Kundalini is energy which all of us have, but few of us are aware of, according to Yogi Bhajan. It is a coiled knot of energy at the base of the spine, known as the first chakra, or energy center. Yogi Bhajan taught his followers how to unleash it and use it to their benefit.

Health Benefits

When set free through meditation, kundalini energy rises up the spine, to the head. As it travels, yoga followers believe that it purifies and strengthens everything it comes in contact with. When regularly released, kundalini can keep sickness at bay by providing a resistance and strengthening the body against it. Some believe that it specifically affects the nervous system and glandular system to improve health in those areas.

Cognitive Awareness

Yoga enthusiasts believe that releasing kundalini through meditation can be an overwhelming experience. You should only attempt it under the guidance of an experienced practitioner because of the power of this energy. As it bursts free, perceptions and senses are sharpened and heightened. In its wake, it leaves an intense feeling of happiness and optimism. As it passes to the brain and higher chakras, cognition heightens. Followers have a sense of being in control of their own thoughts and feelings. RamaLila.org says that epiphanies and moments of sudden enlightenment and understanding are the result of released kundalini, but these moments are only at the edge of the potential benefits this energy can achieve.

Conception

In some cases, kundalini may release spontaneously. Yogi Bhajan's followers believe this occurs at the time of orgasm due to the body's natural urge to procreate. This explosion of kundalini energy promotes and paves the way for conception.

Peril

Kundalini spontaneously breaks free and travels up the spine, affecting the rest of the body, in situations of great danger or extreme peril. Because kundalini is power, it can enable superhuman feats when awakened by the survival instinct, either for your own survival or that of a loved one. RamaLila.org gives the example of a grandmother lifting a car to save a grandchild and indicates that this sort of thing happens because her kundalini released. Other examples are victims of life-threatening crimes being able to cover great distances, against all odds, to get help. Kundalini is a life-affirmative power.
