How to Lose Belly Fat on a Diet

Belly fat is a common scourge of individuals battling weight gain. Between both men and women, hardly any part of the body accumulates fat as quickly and easily as the stomach. The problem is compounded when people misunderstand the cause of their belly fat and the right way to beat it--your belly is not composed of beer, and you don't get rid of it with sit-ups. No matter what kind of exercise you engage in, it'll all be in vain if you aren't eating a proper, healthy diet.

Step 1

Eat breakfast. Don't rush yourself through the morning and miss this meal--it is key to your metabolism and to maintaining energy levels throughout the day. You should also try to eat foods that will increase your blood sugar levels, such as grapefruit, oatmeal and orange juice. Grapefruit and oatmeal are also great metabolism-boosters, which will help your body burn calories more efficiently.

Step 2

Break your three large meals down into five or six smaller ones. This makes your food more manageable for your body to break down, and it keeps the metabolic process going consistently, which will allow your body to become more efficient in its energy production and use.

Step 3

Eat at least 1,500 calories a day. Don't succumb to the temptation to cut out calories--this has a counter effect. When your body doesn't have enough fuel being brought in, the metabolism slows down. When you later resume your regular diet, your metabolism won't be accustomed to the extra calories, and you'll gain all your weight back.

Step 4

Keep your body hydrated with at least eight glasses (64 oz.) of water each day.

Step 5

Increase your intake of complex carbohydrates like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, skim milk, and several kinds of beans, including pinto. Avoid simple and refined carbs found in white bread, cereals, candy, soft drinks, and anything made with high fructose corn syrup.

Step 6

Avoid eating anything within two hours of bedtime.
