Proper gym pants can make a difference in your workout, whether you plan on joining a yoga class, running on the treadmill, weightlifting or participating in an aerobics class. Gym pants can help or hinder your performance and progress during your workout at the gym. The best gym pants provide support and comfort, while allowing you to move freely throughout exercise.

Fabric

The material used to make gym pants varies based on style, intended use and manufacturer. Manufacturers use one or more types of fibers when designing gym pants, including nylon, cotton, Lycra, polyester, Spandex and water wicking fabrics. Light workouts do not cause you to sweat as much as vigorous workouts, giving you more flexibility in the type of clothing you purchase. Most fabrics used in gym pants allow for free movement while allowing your skin to breathe, making them appropriate for a light workout. Vigorous workouts, however, often result in massive sweating, making it important to find gym pants that will pull the sweat into the material and away from your skin. Read the gym pants tag prior to purchase to ensure you purchase the gym pants made from the best material for your workout.

Fit

How your gym pants fit affects your choice in gym pants style. You want to look good at the gym, and also when you run errands before or after your workout. Gym pants come in a variety of styles, including those with flared legs, giving you more freedom in what you do while wearing them. The best gym pants fit comfortably and allow you to look stylish.

Flexibility

The best gym pants also allow you to move freely throughout your exercise. Avoid clothes that pinch your skin or restrict your movement, as well as those that fit so loosely that they snag on the gym equipment. Look for clothes that support your curves and movement without causing you to worry about loose straps, weak fasteners or chafing.

Considerations

Gym pants do not have to cost you an arm ... or a leg. Patricia Pierce, a professor of Rehabilitative and Exercise Sciences at Slippery Rock University in Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania, states, "The best workout pants are those you can afford and work out in comfortably." She says that getting your 30 to 60 minutes a day of exercise means more than looking stylish. If all you can afford is a pair of sweats, go with those. However, clothes that are more expensive may increase the comfort of your workout.
