The South Beach Diet is a commercial program that a cardiologist, Dr. Arthur Agatston, developed to help people lose weight and improve heart health. The diet claims it can help you improve your blood sugar control, lose weight and maintain your weight loss with a healthy lifestyle and diet that emphasizes good carbohydrate choices. South Beach Living products can become an important part of your diet as meal replacements or between meals. If you need to lose weight or you are concerned about your heart health or blood sugar, talk to your doctor before starting a diet.
Basic Information
On the South Beach Diet, you eat 3 meals, two snacks and a dessert each day. Phase 1 is two weeks long and is for fast weight loss. You eat lean proteins, such as white-meat skinless turkey or chicken, eggs, fish, shellfish and soy protein. Also eat high-fiber vegetables, nuts, seeds, low-fat cheese or other dairy products and unsaturated fats, including from avocados, olive oil and canola oil. Do not have starches, fruit or South Beach Living diet products. During Phase 2, you lose weight at a slower rate until you reach your goal weight. During this phase, you can add in whole-grain carbohydrates, such as whole-wheat bread, fruit, dark chocolate, sweet potatoes, peas and pumpkin. Phase 3 is for lifelong maintenance of your weight; foods are similar to Phase 2, but with more room for indulgences. During Phases 2 and 3, you can have South Beach Living meal bars, cereal bars or cookies as part of your meal plan.
Meal Replacement Bars
You can have South Beach Living meal replacement bars during Phases 2 and 3 of the South Beach Diet. The bars have about 210 calories, with 60 calories from fat, or about 7 g total fat with 3 g of saturated fat, which may increase your levels of bad LDL cholesterol. The bars have 19 g protein and 26 g carbohydrates, including 6 g dietary fiber and 1 g sugar. The bars provide at least 25 percent of the daily value for most vitamins and essential minerals.
Cereal Bars
South Beach Living cereal bars can be convenient snacks during Phase 2 or 3 of your South Beach Diet Plan. A bar supplies 140 calories and 10 g protein. It has 5 g total fat and 2 g saturated fat, and 15 g total carbohydrates, with 5 g dietary fiber and 3 g sugars. South Beach Living cereal bars have 10 percent of the daily value for zinc, 15 percent of the daily value for vitamin A and calcium and 25 percent for thiamin, riboflavin, niacin and vitamins B-6 and B-12. You can get detailed information about how to use these bars after you sign up for the diet.
Cookies
When you get to Phase 2 on South Beach, you can have South Beach Living cookies from Kraft for your desserts. A package is 1 serving, and it weighs 24 g and provides 100 calories and 1 g protein. The cookies have 5 g fat, but only 1 g saturated fat. They have 16 g total carbohydrates, and 3 g dietary fiber. The South Beach Diet provides recipes for cookies, such as peanut butter and jelly cookies, but these South Beach Living cookies can be a good dessert alternative if you do not want to bake.
