Your child can derive numerous benefits from an active lifestyle that involves fun and exciting outdoor games. Outdoor activities allow your child to get plenty of exercise, fresh air and vitamin D from sun exposure --- though you should always apply sunscreen to avoid sunburn and long-term sun damage. Exercising early in life can help fight child and adult obesity. Set time aside every day to make sure your child plays outside for at least one hour.

Relay Racing

Gather your family or the neighborhood kids to join in this fun but competitive game. Set up a slightly challenging race using obstacles in your backyard or in a local park. Form two teams to compete against each other, and, for motivation, have a prize waiting for the winning team. Relay racing is a way for kids to learn about competition and work together as a team.

Softball/Baseball

Softball and baseball take teamwork and concentration. Have your child play on a team that meets up at least twice week; your local YMCA may sponsor or have information about youth sports leagues. Some traveling may be involved, for games against other teams. Playing on a baseball or softball can help your child to learn a new sport --- its rules, regulations and the team effort involved.

Shooting Hoops

Set up a basketball hoop in your backyard if space allows. This can save you making a trip to the park, and makes it easier for your child to just step into the backyard to play outdoors. Seeing the hoop every day will also motivate your child to play outdoors. Basketball is a game your child can play competitively on a team, one-on-one or practice alone. This sport works the entire body and is a fun way to burn calories and stay fit.

Aquatics

Water is all around you and can provide entertaining activities for your child. If you do not have a swimming pool in your backyard, you can use the outdoor YMCA or community pools and lakes. Water games that will give your child a good workout include basketball, volleyball, badminton and swim races. All equipment should be made for the water and be soft to prevent injuries. Make sure you provide adult supervision at all times to prevent accidental drownings.
