The weight loss process can be frustrating for everyone. You want to see results, but it always seems to take forever. Or, the minute you do lose some weight, the next day you've gained the weight back. Weight loss is a gradual process that happens over time, just like weight gain. Quick weight loss plans are not effective and are often dangerous. For effective weight loss, you need to make healthy lifestyle changes.
Fad Diet Claims
Before beginning a new diet plan, you should know a few tips for how to spot an unhealthy or fad diet. These diets most often promise quick weight loss and fast results. These are the types of diets you want to avoid because they are often unhealthy and unsafe. Another red flag to look for in a diet plan is whether it encourages physical activity. If it does not encourage exercise, it is probably a fad diet. Fad diets typically sound too good to be true and usually are. A final factor to look for is research. Fad diets don't have research to support their claims. If a diet can be backed up medically, it is probably a safer option.
Nutritional Considerations
Beyond sounding like miracle claims, quick weight loss programs often require you to stick to one food, food group or even recipe. This is an extremely unhealthy practice. There is no one perfect food. Eating only one thing or a few of a certain food group will ultimately lead to nutritional deficiencies. Whether you are trying to lose weight or even just to maintain weight, your body needs a wide variety of vitamins and nutrients. Depriving your body of these can lead to serious health complications.
Dangers of Quick Weight Loss
In addition to nutritional deficiencies, your body can experience health problems from rapid weight loss. Your body needs energy to continue functioning. Rapid weight loss can cause damage to each of your vital organs, including your liver, kidney, heart and brain. Beyond just bodily problems, you could also experience mental harm. Quick weight loss is most often followed with weight gain because these types of diets aren't conducive to a healthy lifestyle. This can cause you to feel as if you must consistently crash diet to lose weight. Eating disorders can become a problem because your relationship with food is distorted. Picking a healthy diet plan is a much better option.
Effective Weight Loss
In order to effectively lose weight, you should aim to lose one to two pounds per week. Although this may seem like a long process, it is ultimately a more attainable goal. By losing weight slowly you are able to develop healthy lifestyle changes. These changes will not only help you lose weight, but also help you keep it off long-term.
