Fitness experts categorize treadmills according to multiple factors: motorized or manual, folding or not folding, motor size, belt size, roller size and cost. Home exercise machines do not need to be able to withstand the type and time of use that heftier machines at a health club or other workout center experience. When you have only a small space for home exercise equipment, the size of a treadmill may matter more than its sturdiness.

Considerations

Determine the amount of space that a treadmill requires by adding approximately 12 inches to the length and 10 inches to the width of the belt. The size of the belt varies according to width and length. Although the belt width can range between 14 inches and 22 inches, the suggested width for walkers and runners is 18 to 20 inches. Belt lengths range from 41 inches to 60 inches. The right belt for you depends upon the length of your walking and running stride.

Treadmills under $1,000 have lower speed ranges, fewer preset workout options, fewer incline options and the smallest belt widths and lengths available. Motor sizes in this price range start out as non-existent and max out at 3.0 horsepower. The smallest of this group is the Weslo Cardio Stride Plus with a belt size of 13 inches by 41 inches. Even though the belt is small, the treadmill deck does not fold to become more compact. The smallest folding treadmill in this price range is the Horizon Evolve SG at 17 inches by 45 inches.

Treadmills in this price range have larger motors, with sizes ranging from 2.0 to 4.0 horsepower. Treadmills under $2,000 generally offer at least six preset workout options, inclines up to a 15 percent grade, and speeds up to 15 mph. The smallest treadmill within this price range is the Endurance TF3i with a belt size of 18 inches by 50 inches. When not in use, the Endurance TF3i has a deck that folds up to clear floor space.

Over $2,000 in 2011

The heavier, more expensive treadmills in this category can handle more use by runners for longer periods of time. Their heavier deck construction withstands the shock of running, and larger belts accommodate long running strides. The smallest treadmill in this category is Star Trac TR901 with a belt size of 19 inches by 53 inches; the machine does not fold. The smallest folding treadmill in this group is the Tunturri T85 with a belt size of 20 inches by 56 inches.
