Restless leg syndrome is a poorly understood but relatively common affliction. Up to 15 percent of the U.S. population suffers from restless leg syndrome, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Marked by uncontrollable leg movements called akathisia, the condition is irritating and may contribute to sleep disturbances. Although there is no cure, some cases of restless leg syndrome can be controlled through nutrition.
Restless Leg Symptoms
The restless leg condition causes an irresistible urge to move the limbs in response to a sensation that may be described as pulling, searing, drawing, tingling, bubbling or crawling. The sensation usually occurs when you are most relaxed and when your legs are at rest. The symptoms generally become worse at night, peaking between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. The lower legs are usually affected the most, but symptoms can also develop in the thighs, feet and even in the arms.
Tryptophan
Tryptophan is an amino acid molecule, one of the building blocks of protein. It cannot be produced by the body and must be obtained through diet. Tryptophan is a precursor in the production of serotonin, a major neurotransmitter that regulates the central nervous system, including motor control. Dietary tryptophan supplementation has been successful in treating a number of conditions caused by low serotonin, including restless leg syndrome.
Foods
Dairy products such as cottage cheese, cheese and milk contain high levels of tryptophan. Seafood, meat, poultry, eggs, whole grains, soy, beans, rice, hummus, lentils, hazelnuts, peanuts, sesame seeds and sunflower seeds are also high in the amino acid. An evening snack that contains high-tryptophan foods, such as a peanut butter sandwich on whole grain bread, might help alleviate your restless leg symptoms.
Other Remedies
Some people experience relief from restless legs with pain medication. A warm bath and hot or cold compresses may be helpful. You can alternate the two to reduce the unpleasant sensations in your legs. A regular program of exercise can also reduce the severity of symptoms. Good sleep habits can provide some relief. Despite the discomforts of restless leg syndrome, try to establish a regular bedtime and waking time.
