Found throughout the upper Midwestern states and into central Canada, muskie are commonly considered a trophy fish for their large body size and ferocious fight. As a result of their size and strength, muskie hunters must use heavy-duty specialized equipment. To meet these demands, fishing equipment manufacturers have produced a variety of equipment choices including fishing line designed specifically for muskie fishing.

Types

The main types of fishing line used for muskie fishing include monofilament and braided lines that are similar to the lines used for other predator fish but have increased strength and durability. Monofilament lines are the most common type of fishing line used for muskies and provide a combination of sensitivity, stretch and durability. Braided fishing lines are characterized by a small diameter but still contain a high level of strength and sensitivity.

Strength

Choosing the right strength -- measured in pound test -- is essential for landing a large muskie. The strength of the monofilament and braided lines allow you to fish for muskie in extreme conditions that require fishing near rocks, tree stumps and weather without worrying about abrasions to the line. Most muskie hunters choose a monofilament or braided line with a 20- to 40-pound-test. However, some muskie hunters prefer fishing line rated at a 10- to 15-pound test that matches the lightweight tackle.

Leaders

Regardless of whether you use monofilament or braided fishing line for muskies, you must place a steel leader on the end of the fishing line. This prevents the muskie from biting and ultimately snapping the line after your set the hook with their razor sharp teeth. Use a 6- to 18-inch titanium leader rated at 100 pounds. Additional tackle equipment including the rod and reel must match the pound test and size of the leader for optimal bait presentation.

Techniques

The type of fishing line used for muskie fishing can be determined by your angling techniques. Two common methods used by muskie hunters include trolling and casting. Monofilament lines are ideal for trolling because the line stretches when the muskie bites the bait. Monofilament is also ideal for casting crankbaits in shallow water near weed edges. Braided lines, however, have minimal stretch making them more suitable for casting in heavy cover situations where you want increased sensitivity.
