Dieting is often associated with weight loss; however, dieting involves making healthy food choices every day. A healthy diet provides your body with all of the nutrients, such as vitamins and minerals, it needs daily to function properly. Without a healthy diet, you may have to rely on man-made supplements like multi-vitamins and mineral supplements to provide your body with these nutrients, but not every nutrient needed is available in a supplement.

Although dieting is often associated with weight loss, you can follow a diet plan to gain weight, lose weight or maintain your current weight. The difference between the diet plan for each of these three is the number of calories you should consume each day. If you are trying to gain weight, you have to eat more calories each day than you use. If you are trying to lose weight, you have to eat fewer calories than you use. If you are trying to maintain your current weight, you should eat and use the same number of calories.
Components
When making your plan for dieting, you have to include everything you eat and drink each day. This includes basic foods like meat and other proteins, vegetables and fruits, breads and grains, milk and other dairy products. It also includes beverages like coffee, tea, juice and alcohol, as well as condiments like sugar, salad dressings, mustard and mayonnaise. No matter what you are following a diet for, you should ensure that you choose primarily low-calorie and low-fat foods in order to keep your body healthy and functioning properly.
Benefits
Dieting, as long as your diet isn't overly restrictive, can lead to numerous health benefits. By eating healthy foods and keeping your weight within healthy limits, you can reduce your risk of heart disease, sleep apnea, stroke, type 2 diabetes and other obesity-related conditions. Your mood may also improve when you are getting all of the nutrients you need daily. Irritability and depression are associated with nutritional deficiencies due to an unhealthy diet; however, once you start dieting with a healthy plan, you will find that these improve.
Considerations
In order to keep your body fit and healthy while dieting, you have to exercise regularly. Exercise is part of keeping your calorie usage where it needs to be for your dieting goals. Exercise helps to build lean muscle mass and burn fat. This helps you to look firm and toned. If you are gaining weight, exercise helps you to gain healthy weight instead of gaining fat. Weight lifting, walking, yoga, Pilates, running, swimming and sports are all ways you can exercise. At least 30 minutes of exercise on five days per week is necessary for all adults; however, if you are trying to lose weight or maintain weight after losing weight, you must increase this to at least 60 minutes daily.
