Juniper oil is an extract from the juniper berry. Although the name suggests that juniper berry is a fruit, it is actually a cone from the juniper plant. Juniper berries have been part of natural medicine for over a century. NYU Langone Medical Center reports that in Britain, herbalists use products from the juniper berry to treat congestive heart failure and to moderate menstruation. Talk to your doctor before using any dietary supplement.

Diuretic

Juniper oil is one element in a diuretic herbal cocktail to reduce water retention. A diuretic helps flush water that may build up in tissue. Although this may be effective, using an herbal diuretic may mask another potentially dangerous medical condition. Katherine Zeratsky, R.D., L.D., from Mayo Clinic, warns patients to see a doctor to rule out a medical cause for the retention.

Bladder Infections

NYU Langone states that juniper oils will increase kidney filtration and, therefore, help to promote an increase in urine flow. The primary benefit for this may be as a treatment for bladder infections. In theory, increasing flow may help eliminate bacteria from the urinary tract. There is no scientific evidence that this will work.

Anti-Inflammatory

There is some evidence that juniper oil works to reduce inflammation, but the studies are limited. This may be useful for those suffering from arthritis and other inflammatory illnesses. You should not take any food or supplement containing juniper oil while taking a prescription medication without permission from your doctor. Some supplements may hinder the effectiveness of daily medication.

Anti-Microbial and Anti-Viral

One 2003 study conducted by the Medical University of Gdansk found that juniper oil did show some antimicrobial properties. This means the oil may help to fight infection. Juniper oil has also been used as a treatment for the herpes virus and gonorrhea. Test tube studies show that the oil may inhibit viral growth.

Safety

There are no side effects reported from juniper oil. Any time you take a dietary supplement you risk a potential allergic reaction or drug interaction. If after taking juniper oil, you develop a rash, hives or feel swelling in your throat, this may indicate an allergy that requires medical treatment. Don't take any supplement containing juniper oil if you take lithium. Do not rely on an herbal treatment for an infection, such as a bladder infection. Infections can be potentially dangerous and should be evaluated by a doctor.
