Old exercise equipment may be bulky, rusty and collecting cobwebs in your garage. There are a number of options to consider if you're looking to donate or restore these ancient gym artifacts. Remember, one man's trash is another man's treasure.

Donate

Old exercise equipment can be donated to local gyms, health clubs or YMCAs. Teens who frequent these establishments could get plenty of use out of exercise equipment that you no longer need or want. Also, there are many charities or thrift stores that would love the donation of the equipment and can offer a tax break to the person donating. Exercise equipment could be worth a large deduction on your income taxes and reduce clutter in your home, and some charities will pick up the equipment from your house.

Sell

If the equipment is still operational or just needs a tuneup consider selling the item. Garage sales, swap meets or classified ads on websites like Craigslist are great ways to find local people who would get use out of your retired fitness equipment. The main benefit to selling the item is being able to recover some of the money spent on the equipment. The disadvantage of bulky equipment is finding a interested buyer with the proper vehicle and manpower to move the machine. If possible, offer delivery service to interested buyers for an additional fee.

Restore

Fitness equipment restoration can be pricey but well worth it if you plan on using it again. Local fitness equipment repair companies usually offer restoration services and will be able to replace broken or missing parts. Also, restored or refurbished exercise machines will make the equipment much more valuable if you plan to sell it in the future.

Gift

Give the exercise equipment as a gift to a friend or family member who is trying to get fit. If you arer unable to find someone who is interested in the equipment, then consider posting it on websites like Freecycle that contain ads placed by individuals who are giving items away. Also, PlayitAgainSports.com will buy old treadmills, ellipticals and weight sets for about one-third of the retail price in cash or store credit, according to Tesh.com.
