Astaxanthin is a carotenoid pigment that is naturally found in foods like salmon, shrimp, yeast and crustaceans. According to AARP Healthcare, this supplement is typically used as an antioxidant but may also help with carpal tunnel syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis and male infertility. More research is needed to fully explore the benefits of astaxanthin. Prior to using this supplement, consult with your health-care provider, since astaxanthin is not appropriate for individuals with certain medical conditions.

Step 1

Consume three gelcaps, or the equivalent of 6 mg, with meals for eight weeks, states AARP Healthcare. Consult your health-care provider before increasing your dosage or if you want to take astaxanthin for more than eight weeks.

Step 2

Take 16 mg of astaxanthin daily for three months if you are being treated for male infertility, states AARP Healthcare. It is not known whether this supplement is effective for this condition, and more research needs to be done for a definitive association.

Step 3

Talk with your doctor about altering your dose of astaxanthin if necessary. According to Rxlist.com, appropriate dosages can vary, depending on any medical conditions you may have, your age and overall health.
