Diabetes is a chronic health condition caused by too much sugar, or glucose, in your bloodstream. Diabetes, also known as diabetes mellitus, occurs when your body is no longer able to turn the glucose in your blood into usable energy in your body's cells. Although some herbs may be helpful adjunct therapies in treating diabetes, not all herbs have been subjected to rigorous scientific evaluation. Always talk with your doctor before taking any herbal remedies.
Diabetes Info
Diabetes is usually classified as either Type 1 diabetes or Type 2 diabetes, although other types of diabetes, such as gestational diabetes, also occur. Type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune condition that accounts for about 5 to 10 percent of diabetes cases in the United States, occurs when the immune system damages insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body produces sufficient insulin, but is not able to use insulin properly to help balance blood sugar levels.
Herbal Aids
Herbal aids should possess the ability to help balance blood sugar levels, which in turn may help prevent the serious health complications associated with diabetes. In his book "Medical Nutrition From Marz," naturopathic physician and licensed acupuncturist Russell B. Marz states that two of the most commonly used herbal aids in treating diabetes are fenugreek seeds and gymnema sylvestre. Other helpful herbs may include juniper, bilberry, garlic and Siberian ginseng.
Featured Botanical
Fenugreek is a botanical remedy that has historically been used in treating elevated blood sugar levels in diabetics, although the use of this herb may require further scientific studies to explain its beneficial health effects. The dried seeds of the fenugreek plant, according to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, may be helpful in treating diabetes, lymphadenitis, high blood pressure and numerous other health complaints. This herbal remedy is also believed to possess the ability to prevent or reduce plaque in the arteries.
Warning
Because herbs may have powerful effects, you should always talk with your doctor before using herbal medicines. In some cases, herbs may not be appropriate, due to an allergy or a co-existing medical condition you have or a prescription drug you use. Diabetes can lead to organ failure if your condition is not properly managed. Herbs may best be used as an adjunct therapy in the treatment of diabetes.
