Bike racks provide a way to transport your bicycle to other environments and terrain. The main types of bike racks are roof mounted, trunk mounted and hitch mounted racks. Each style has their pros and cons based on capacity, cost and ease of use. Consider your own needs for bicycle transportation and choose the rack that is best for you.

Roof Mounted Racks

Roof mounted bike racks can accommodate from two to four bicycles. You secure bicycles to attachments which connect to a pre-existing roof rack system. Roof mounted systems are the most secure type of bike rack available and they are very affordable if you already have a roof rack. If you don't have a roof rack the cost is considerable and you may find that raising your bike to the top of your vehicle is difficult.

Trunk Mounted Racks

Trunk mounted racks use straps to attach to the lip of your trunk and are capable of holding up to three bicycles. Trunk mounted systems work on any most vehicles, even those with non-standard trunks like hatchbacks and vans. Trunk mounted bike racks are the most affordable. However, they are the least secure and may allow bicycles to move slightly while you are driving. Trunk mounted systems are also the most time consuming to install and not recommended if you frequently transport your bicycles.

Hitch Mounted Racks

Hitch mounted racks attach to the pre-existing hitch mount of your vehicle. The racks are more secure than trunk mounted systems and are easier to equip. However, hitch mounted racks may prevent access to your trunk area. To get around this, choose a hitch rack that swings away from your trunk to allow for easy access. Regular and swing away hitch mounts can hold up to five bicycles, but they add significant length to your vehicle.

Considerations

When choosing a bike rack, consider several factors. If you normally only transport one bicycle, consider whether that number may increase when accompanied by friends or family. Installing a roof rack for bicycles can offer other possibilities including the mounting of kayaks, skis, snowboards and cargo carriers. If you are considering trunk mounted racks, look for ones that are more versatile so that you can attach it to other vehicles.
