High blood sugar, known as hyperglycemia, is a condition where the body fails to reduce levels of sugar in the blood. Untreated high blood sugar can lead to type 2 diabetes. The American Diabetes Association recommends general dietary guidelines, but you should work with your doctor or a professional dietitian to develop an individualized plan based on your specific condition.

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are the brain's main source of energy. Carbohydrates should provide 45 percent to 65 percent of total daily calories, preferably from high fiber fruits, vegetables, whole grains and beans. Monitor your daily intake closely using a carbohydrate counter. Learn carbohydrate amounts for each food. Create a weekly meal plan guide to save time.

Fats

Fats are recommended to compose 25 to 35 percent of your daily calories. Olive oil, avocado, peanut and canola oil are your best choices. Limit saturated fat such as red meat to less than 7 percent of your daily calories. Limit trans-fats and processed foods that use hydrogenated oils. These oils harden at room temperature and contribute to artery congestion.

Protein

Ideally, protein should provide between 12 percent and 20 percent of your daily calories. If you have kidney disease, you should consume less. Your doctor will provide a specific amount; generally, it is below 10 percent of your daily calories. In kidney conditions, soy and fish are best choices of protein. Red meat consumption is discouraged.

Safety

Learn the symptoms of hyperglycemia in order to treat it quickly. Symptoms include increased dizziness, thirst and increased urination. When tests indicate sugar in the urine, hyperglycemia is present. Blood tests can determine blood sugar levels. If you have hyperglycemia or diabetes, your doctor will instruct you on managing your condition.
