The Fruit Flush diet is a three-day diet program created by nutritionist Jay Robb. His book, "Fruit Flush 3-Day Detox" was published in 2005 and may help jump start weight loss while following a strict three-day schedule. Talk to your doctor before starting a new diet program, particularly if you have health conditions and injuries.
Day 1
The first day of the Fruit Flush Diet involves removing any toxins from fast food and other junk foods from the body. Robb suggests that drinking nothing but protein shakes for the first day of the diet will cleanse the body and prepare you for the fruit portion of the Fruit Flush. Drink a protein shake at 8 a.m., and continue to drink one protein shake every two hours until 6 p.m. Do not eat or drink anything else but water for the rest of the day.
Day 2 and 3
Follow the same diet plan on both Day 2 and Day 3 of the Fruit Flush Diet. Robb recommends eating mostly fruit during Day 2 and Day 3 because he believes its acidic content will naturally dissolve toxic buildup in the body. Eat any type of fresh fruit you like every two hours from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Do not eat any dried, canned or frozen fruit. At 6 p.m., eat between 3 and 6 cups of raw veggies, half an avocado and a protein shake.
Weight Loss
While following the Fruit Flush Diet, you will consume approximately 1,000 calories per day. In "Fruit Flush 3 Day Detox," Robb says that dieters can expect to lose up to 9 lbs. while following the diet. Although he suggests that this is because you are eating fruit, the weight loss likely occurs because you are consuming far fewer calories than you would would usually consume -- the weight you are losing is water weight.
Expert Insight
The American Heart Association considers a short-term diet that involves eating small portions of low-calorie foods a fad diet. Fad diets like the Fruit Flush Diet may cause temporary weight loss, but because they are unsustainable diet programs that are only followed for a few days, you will probably not keep the weight off. Once you resume your regular eating habits, the weight you lost while following the Fruit Flush Diet will probably return.
