Psoriasis is an inflammatory skin condition that causes uncomfortable scaly skin to build up on the skin's surface. This condition is both unsightly and painful. Creams are usually prescribed as a treatment method to cut back on the thick skin, but exercise can help to reduce irritation and prevent flareups when performed regularly.

What Is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease that occurs when a group of cells in your body attack your skin cells for no reason. In reaction, your skin cells multiply, leading to thick, flaky skin that can get itchy and be generally uncomfortable. Taking care of yourself in general, along with exercising, can prevent flareups and keep your skin smoother for longer.

Role of Stress

Being stressed or suffering from anxiety can cause psoriasis to worsen. Thankfully, exercise can be used to reduce your stress and anxiety levels and improve your self-confidence. Regular exercise can help keep worries at bay and improve your health so you feel and look better. Your psoriasis may even go on hiatus. Regular workouts along with relaxing routines like yoga or tai chi have been shown to be beneficial.

Cardiovascular Workouts

According to the Columbia University Medical Center, cardiovascular activity like walking, jogging, running, cycling, swimming or aerobics can reduce the instances of psoriasis flareups. Make 30 minutes of activity, five times a week, your goal to keep your psoriasis at bay and to improve your physical condition and heart health at the same time.

Results

In severe cases of psoriasis, it can develop into psoriatic arthritis, which causes the joints to stiffen due to the thickened skin caused by the disease. According to MayoClinic.com, exercise can reduce the pain, stiffness and fatigue associated with this disease. Consult your doctor about any concerns you have regarding your psoriasis.
