Many Eastern practices such as yoga and tantra incorporate an energetic climax known as the kundalini awakening. The experience is connected to spiritual advancement and the evolution of consciousness, and some compare the sensation to that of a tremor starting at your sacrum and running all the way up to your spine.
Definition
In Sanskrit, the term kundalini means coiled up. According to the Kundalini Research Institute, as you become increasingly aware of yourself and your surroundings, your sensitivity heightens and you evolve into a space without boundaries. This is the place where all creative expression, including genius, inspiration, perception and intuition originate.
Symptoms
A kundalini experience varies for each individual, and its sensations often depend on the type of meditative, tantric or yoga experience in which you participate. The feeling might be dramatic for some and subtle for others. Some people report jerking movements or contractions in their body. It may also stimulate and heighten your senses and make you feel larger than the confines of your body.
Types
All types of kundalini experiences are based on the premise that humans are an extension of a larger life force. In yoga, this universal source is known as prana. In other practices, it is called chi, the holy spirit, bio-energy or the breath of life. Regardless of the title, to have a kundalini experience is to reunite with the cosmic energy from which you come.
Expert Insight
According to Leslie Shephard, the author of several metaphysical books including "The World of Paranormal Phenomena" and "The Encyclopedia of Occultism and Para-psychology," the kundalini awakening is more credible than other New Age gimmicks. In his words, "With old and new gimmicks, gurus at least revived the ancient Indian concept of kundalini, a latent energy in the universe and in the human body."
