If you are always on the go, fast food may often feel like your only choice for meals, and if you don't choose wisely, fast-food meals can lead to weight gain and health risks due to an unhealthy saturated fat intake and high amounts of sodium. By choosing lower-calorie menu items and items containing fiber, you can begin eating healthier fast foods.
Fresco Burrito
By eliminating dairy products and the traditional sauce, the fresco menu at Taco Bell has a number of healthy items. One of the healthier items on this menu is the fresco bean burrito. This burrito is a soft flour tortilla filled with beans, salsa and onions. The fresco bean burrito contains about 350 calories and 8 g of fat. The 12 g of fiber and 13 g of protein contained in each burrito will help to fill you up and keep you feeling full until your next meal. Also, the 12 g of fiber will help you consume about a third of your fiber needs for the day. Similar to many fast-food items, this burrito does contain a considerable amount of sodium at 1,170 mg.
Oatmeal Bowl
McDonald's new oatmeal bowl can provide you with a healthy fast-food option. The fruit and maple oatmeal bowl contains 290 calories and just 4.5 grams of fat. By opting not to add brown sugar you can decrease the total calories to 260, according to "Family Circle."
Also, the oatmeal and fruit combination will provide you with a healthy amount of fiber, about 5 g, and some whole grains.
Veggie Delite
Subway has a variety of healthier menu options, and the Veggie Delite is one of them. The Veggie Delite has 7 g of fat if you order it with the cheese, but by eliminating the cheese you can reduce the total fat and calories to 285 calories. Choose whole wheat bread for a healthier, fiber-filled option and get apple slices instead of chips. The apples will add additional fiber, vitamins and minerals to your meal.
BK Veggie
Burger King has a veggie burger option called the BK Veggie. This veggie burger patty is made with vegetables and whole grains, making it a higher-fiber item. Traditionally the BK Veggie is served with mayonnaise, but by asking for no mayonnaise, you can cut the total calories by close to 100 calories, to a total of 320 calories. Also, if you want to reduce the calories even further, ask for the burger to be served with extra lettuce as a replacement for the sesame seed bun, which will result in a 190-calorie burger. This veggie burger will also provide you with a healthy amount of protein at 22 g per burger.
