Phentermine, the generic medication of the prescription drug Adipex, is the most commonly prescribed appetite suppressant in the United States, according to the Weight-Control Information Network. While the medication works to suppress appetite so that you can lose weight, this may make it more difficult for you to meet your vitamin requirements. Although multivitamin supplements should not be used as replacements for a healthy, well-balanced diet, they can act as a nutritional insurance policy to ensure your vitamin requirements are met.
Step 1
Rule out possible drug interactions. Although there are no known drug interactions between Adipex and vitamin supplements, you should always check with a doctor or pharmacist before taking them together.
Step 2
Read the directions for both your vitamins and your Adipex prescription thoroughly. If there is anything about the directions that you do not understand, contact a doctor.
Step 3
Decide if you would like to take your vitamin supplement at the same time you take your dose of Adipex. Adipex is generally taken in the morning, either right before or right after breakfast. Taking your vitamin supplement at the same time as Adipex may make it easier for you to remember to take it each day, but this is simply a matter of personal preference. Select a time of day to take the vitamin supplement that is most convenient for you.
Step 4
Take your vitamin supplement and Adipex dosage as directed. While the specific directions may vary depending on your individual circumstances, most people take Adipex and vitamin supplements by swallowing them whole with a glass of water.
Step 5
Note any side effects that occur. Although vitamin supplements generally do not cause any side effects, Adipex has a number of potential side effects. These include diarrhea, constipation, dry mouth, dizziness, headache, sexual dysfunction, gastrointestinal upset, tremors, hives, high blood pressure, mood changes, insomnia and overstimulation. Contact a doctor as soon as possible if any of these side effects develop or change in intensity.
Step 6
Continue taking Adipex as directed by your doctor. This medication is typically only prescribed for short-term use, generally only a few weeks. Do not suddenly stop taking Adipex without talking to your doctor first, as doing so may cause unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. You may continue to take vitamin supplements after you stop taking Adipex, if you wish.
Tips and Warnings
- Although Adipex is typically taken before or shortly after breakfast, it can be taken later in the day as well. Avoid taking it after 6 pm, however, as doing so may increase the likelihood of insomnia.
- Avoid drinking alcohol while taking Adipex, as it may exacerbate unpleasant side effects. Do not take Adipex with any other diet or prescription medications without explicit permission to do so from a doctor or pharmacist. Adipex may be habit-forming. Do not take more of the medication than prescribed. Do not share the medication with anyone else.
