Calcium hypochlorite is an oxidizer and a disinfectant also known as chlorinated lime, calcium salt, calcium oxychloride, perchloron and hypochlorous acid. It is available in a white powder, pellet or granule form. When exposed to water, calcium hypochlorite releases chlorine and oxygen and smells like chlorine bleach. The chemical is not flammable, although it can react explosively with ammonia, amines or organic sulfides. It should be stored in a dry, ventilated location at temperatures below 120ºF
Step 1
Remove mildew on bathroom tile by spraying a commercial cleaning solution containing calcium hypochlorite. The chemical kills the mildew by oxidizing the organic growth.
Step 2
Purify swimming pool water with calcium hypochlorite slow-release pellets. When mixed with the pool water, the chemical releases chlorine, oxidizing pathogens and organic material like algae. The residual chlorine from the slow-release tablets keeps the pool water free of bacteria for extended periods.
Step 3
Remove organic material and bacteria from well water using calcium hypochlorite, making it safe to drink. Consider hiring well treatment professionals or follow the manufacturer's directions for drinking water purification.
Step 4
Disinfect your hot tub using granules of calcium hypochlorite specifically designed for spas. Chlorine shock treatments oxidize the organic material, like dead skin, while preventing cloudy water. The residual chlorine will kill the bacteria that live in warm water. Use a test strip to check current chlorine levels in the water, and then follow manufacturer's instructions for the chlorine shock treatment.
Step 5
Purchase a commercial weed killer made with calcium hypochlorite. Spray it on weeds that grow between paving blocks or in the cracks of concrete. Use this weed killer with caution, as the solution is toxic.
Step 6
Bleach wood pulp with a calcium hypochlorite solution. The paper made from bleached pulp will be much whiter and brighter.
