Kava is a medicinal substance derived from the Piper methysticum plant. Traditionally used as a ceremonial beverage in the Pacific Islands, kava may also be used to treat anxiety and insomnia, a chronic sleep disorder. Additional research is needed to examine these purported health benefits of kava, however. The amount of kava you should take may vary depending on your weight or health status. For this reason, discuss the proper use and safety of kava with your doctor before using this herbal treatment.
Recommended Dosage
Ground kava root is usually taken as a decoction, which is prepared by boiling the herb down in water. The recommended decoction dosage of dried kava root is 2 to 4 g up to three times each day, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Unfortunately, it may take up to four weeks of daily kava root use before you notice any improvement of your symptoms. Do not take kava root continuously for more than three months, unless otherwise instructed by your medical provider.
Alternate Preparations and Dosages
Alternatively, people with anxiety can take 150 to 300 mg of standardized kava containing 30 to 70 percent kavalactones one to three times each day. For insomniacs, the typical dosage is 210 mg kava taken approximately 1 hour before you intend to fall asleep.
Severe Side Effects
Though more research is needed, treatment with kava may cause liver damage -- also called hepatotoxicity -- in certain people. Damage to your liver may cause jaundice, severe abdominal pain, vomiting, joint pain, appetite loss and fatigue. If you develop any of these severe side effects while taking kava root, seek prompt care from your physician.
Mild to Moderate Side Effects
While taking kava, you may experience mild stomach discomfort, drowsiness, dizziness, tremors or restlessness. Kava may also induce a mild to moderate allergic skin reaction, which may result in dry, itchy or flaky skin. People who take kava for longer than recommended may be at risk of experiencing hair loss or partial hearing loss. Contact your doctor for further evaluation if you experience any of these health problems following treatment with kava.
