Sometimes finding the time to get to the gym seems impossible. And the cost of a gym membership may not be in your budget. Neither of these reasons, however, mean that you can't get an effective workout. You can exercise and lose weight without leaving your house by taking advantage of items that you have around your house -- canned goods in your pantry, stairs and jump rope. Even daily chores can help you burn calories.
Start Scrubbing
It's not glamorous, but vigorous house cleaning really burns calories, elevates your heart rate and even works muscles all over your body. If you're scrubbing, mopping, sweeping and straightening with gusto, you're getting a cardio and strength workout. Cleaning your house not only burns calories, but it's a task that helps you accomplish two goals at once. Yard work counts too, so head outside and start digging, pulling, trimming and mowing your way to losing weight.
Hit the Stairs
Stair-climbing machines at the gym may be one of your favorite exercise machines. The burn in your thighs, your pounding heart and the sweat rolling off your body show you that you're getting a tough workout. The machine simulates stairs, but If you have stairs in your house, you don't need a machine -- squeeze in a workout by walking and even running up and down your stairs. You can achieve the same cardio and intensity of using a machine at the gym.
Use Your Body Weight
You don't need machines or expensive equipment for a good workout. Often, your body weight will do the trick. At home, try pushups and abdominal crunches to work your arms and abs. Try wall sits, and even balancing exercises like standing on one leg to strengthen muscles. If you don't have dumbbells, grab some canned goods and use those as your light free weights.
Create Your Workout
Create an exercise plan at home that doesn't require money or equipment but that gives a good workout without boredom. Try alternating between stair climbing, running in place, jumping jacks, shadowboxing and even jumping rope along with your strengthening exercises. If you've got kids, a backyard game of tag, football or soccer will leave you breathless while having a good time at home.
