Many factors contribute to the health of your hair -- including your diet, age, stress level, genetics and hair care techniques. Exercises such as yoga and performing inversions like handstands may contribute to healthy hair. Handstands increase the blood flow to your scalp, which can promote hair health and growth. Consider consulting with a licensed yoga instructor about proper technique. And talk to your doctor before you start a new workout routine.

Inversions and Hair Health

When you spend time upside down, it increases the amount of blood flow to your head. This, in turn, may increase the circulation in your scalp, which can improve the health of your hair. Doing inverted poses can also relieve some of the tension in your neck, which can indirectly promote hair health and growth, according to Holistic Online. However, you should not do inverted poses if you have high blood pressure or do not have permission from your doctor.

Exercise, Stress and Hair

Excess stress can lead to some types of hair loss, as well as harm the health of your locks. While not all types of loss can be prevented, performing yoga and other kinds of exercise regularly may lower your stress levels and stop the damage stress is causing to your hair. Talk to your physician if you believe you may benefit from a yoga practice, and tell him about any hair-related or other symptoms you are experiencing.

Prepare for Handstand

If you have been practicing yoga regularly for a few months, you may be ready to try a handstand. Be sure you are warmed up and have stretched to loosen your shoulders and back. You may want to do the pose against a wall when you first start out. Place your fingers 2 inches from the wall, and begin by hopping one leg up in the air. You may need to do this several times, pulling your ab muscles tight, until you have gained enough strength to kick fully into the pose. Stay in the pose for about 15 seconds to start, gradually working your way up to a full minute to receive all the hair and health benefits of the pose.

Other Postures

If you are not ready for handstands or just want to vary your inversions, you can do other poses to promote hair health as well. Consider downward dog, shoulder stand or camel pose, which will all place your head below your heart and increase blood flow to your scalp. You might also try headstand when you are ready, which will give you the added benefit of scalp stimulation to promote hair health.
