Just as there are different yoga styles, there are different styles of Pilates geared to a variety of fitness levels and age groups. Depending on your fitness goals, you may choose a Pilates style that will give you a full-body workout or one that works mainly on your back muscles for strength. Always consult with your physical therapist before engaging in a Pilates routine if you have ongoing pain or specific health concerns.
Power Pilates
Power Pilates was developed in the late 1980s by Pilates master teachers Robert Liekens, Phoebe Higgins and Susan Moran, along with chiropractor Dr. Howard Sichel. Power Pilates targets core work and it focuses on the classical Pilates style, developed by Joseph Pilates, which gives personal attention to each student while providing a vigorous workout session. This style of Pilates was acquired by APOGEE Wellness in 2009.
Core Dynamic Pilates
Core Dynamics Pilates was developed in 1996 by Pilates instructor Michele Larsson. It focuses on extending the knowledge of existing Pilates instructors in going deeper with the original Pilates series developed by Joseph Pilates, including the five main pieces of equipment. With Core Dynamic Pilates, you can focus on specific exercises to heal injuries while strengthening your body, as it is meant to be mainly a therapeutical style of Pilates.
Body Tonic Pilates
Body Tonic Pilates is a style developed by Pilates instructor Nadia Rodriguez. It is geared to give you a full-body workout. With this style you can aim to bring your body to its maximum physical potential as you build strength using resistance, improve muscle flexibility and increase range of motion in your joints. As with classical Pilates, the workout begins at your core and it will help you improve your overall body posture and alignment.
Romana Kryzanowska Pilates
Romana Kryzanowska Pilates has a direct lineage to Joseph Pilates, since Romana Kryzanowska was one of his students and was assigned to continue his workout legacy. The training for this Pilates style is run by Romana, her daughter and granddaughter. The main focus of Romana's Pilates style is to engage with your lower back pressed down to the ground as opposed to other more modern Pilates styles that teach to engage from a neutral pelvis.
Fletcher Pilates
Fletcher Pilates was developed by Ron Fletcher as a style of Pilates with the philosophy of encouraging a deep experience through each movement of your body. To train to teach this style of Pilates, you must do a 30 hour training.
