Neuropathy, also called peripheral neuropathy, is a disorder associated with your peripheral nerves, or the nerves that carry motor, sensory and organ-related information to and from your brain. The Neuropathy Association states that neuropathy usually affects your extremities, especially your hands and feet, and that this condition causes numerous signs and symptoms. Herbal therapies may be helpful in treating your neuropathy, but you should always discuss the underlying cause of and alternative treatment methods for neuropathy with your doctor beforehand.
Neuropathy and Health
Neuropathy is a disorder that can significantly affect your quality of life and may be caused by conditions that, over time, can lead to serious health consequences, such as diabetes. The Neuropathy Association states that about 30 percent of neuropathy cases are caused by diabetes; 30 percent are idiopathic, or caused by unknown factors; and the remainder are caused by tumors, autoimmune conditions, infections and toxins. Numbness, tingling, pain and weakness in affected areas are among the most common signs and symptoms of neuropathy.
Herbal Therapies
Herbal therapies have long been used as either standalone or adjunct therapies in treating neuropathy. Certain herbal remedies may help alleviate the symptoms associated with this condition or prevent the peripheral nerve damage associated with diabetes. In "Herbal Medicine From the Heart of the Earth," Sharol Tilgner, a naturopathic doctor and herbalist, notes that nerve-calming herbs, or nervines, include valerian, damiana, lavender, linden flower and black cohosh. Herbs that help control blood sugar levels and may help prevent diabetic neuropathy include jambul seed, fenugreek and bilberry.
A Helpful Botanical
Lavender may be a helpful botanical in the treatment of neuropathy, although few studies have examined lavender's ability to effectively treat this condition. According to master herbalist Ed Smith, author of "Therapeutic Herb Manual," lavender is a nerve tonic, which means that it nourishes and helps support the health and function of your nerves and nervous system. This botanical remedy is also used in treating mild depression, headache and nausea. Essential oil of lavender is commonly used in aromatherapy.
Additional Information
Neuropathy is a serious health problem that requires the attention and intervention of a qualified health care practitioner. If you experience neuropathy-related symptoms, schedule an appointment with your primary health care provider for a full assessment of your condition. Your physician can counsel you on the risk, benefits and potential side effects of herbal therapies. Always use great caution when ingesting herbs, as some herbs may cause undesirable side effects if used incorrectly.
