5 Things You Need to Know About Breast Reduction Procedures

1. Some Melons Grow Too Big

Unlike a breast augmentation, a breast reduction, or reduction mammaplasty, is usually done to relieve the pain and physical problems, such as stress on the back and neck, caused by large, heavy breasts. There are several reasons a woman may choose a breast reduction. Not only do over-sized breasts cause pain, possible skeletal malformations and breathing problems, they also cause problems with daily activities, affect your sleep and cause issues with self confidence. If your breasts have reached their full development, you're either finished having children or don't plan to breastfeed, and you're mentally prepared for the physical change, you are probably a good candidate for the surgery.

2. Make Them Pay

Depending on your plastic surgeon's fees, hospital costs and other related expenses, the cost of a reduction mammaplasty varies and could be upwards of $10,000. Most insurance companies pay for at least a portion of breast reductions if it is a medical necessity. Ask your doctor to write a letter for pre-authorization from your insurance company. Some plastic surgery clinics allow you to either pay for your procedure up front or make payments.

3. Shrinking Them Down

At your initial consultation with your board certified plastic surgeon, your doctor will take measurements, photos and X-rays of your breasts. The day of the surgery, your doctor will mark your breasts while you're sitting up so he'll know where to make the incisions when you're lying on the operating table. The surgeon cuts the breast along the markings and removes the extra skin, fat and tissue. The surgeon usually moves the nipple to higher ground, and in some cases, it may lose its sensitivity.

4. Give Yourself Time to Recover

Most breast reduction surgeries are very successful procedures, but due to the tissue movement, you will be bruised and sore for a while. As with any major surgery, you have to take it easy for a few weeks, and the stitches should come out in two to three weeks. Although, most surgeries go off without a hitch, there are possible side effects, such as infection, anesthesia complications or misshapen or uneven breasts.

5. Men Have Boobs Too

Many men have larger breasts than they like, a condition called gynecomastia. This is when men have over-developed breast tissue. Gynecomastia affects men of any age due to hormones, heredity, health conditions or as a side effect of drugs. Men with gynecomastia may opt for a breast reduction, which is the same reduction mammaplasty that women have. However, many times, liposuction will do the trick on men whose breasts are larger due to excess fatty tissue.
