Microgestine Side Effects

Microgestine is one of the trade names for a particular combination of hormonal birth control. Microgestine contains norethindrone and ethinyl estradiol, which are two chemicals that can mimic female hormones. These two synthetic hormones, when used together, can disrupt the menstrual cycle's hormone changes, preventing ovulation from occurring. Without ovulation, pregnancy cannot occur.

Common Side Effects

Like almost all prescription medications, Microgestine can cause certain side effects. Common side effects include problems with the gastrointestinal system, including abdominal cramps, bloating, nausea and vomiting. Because Microgestine affects hormone levels, it can also cause breast swelling, tenderness and pain. It can also cause increased hair growth, as well as freckling or changes in the color of the skin on your face. Microgestine can also lower your libido and be responsible for changes in your menstrual cycle. It can also cause agitation, nervousness and headaches. These aren't considered to be serious side effects and you should only contact your doctor if they become unbearable.

Allergic Side Effects

Microgestine is made up of hormones that are synthetically produced, which means that they are more likely to cause an allergic reaction. Symptoms of an allergic reaction can be very mild and include the development of hives or a rash. A more serious allergic reaction can cause swelling of your hands, feet, lips, tongue or face.
For some people, the allergic reaction can be rather severe and cause swelling of the throat, leading to difficulty in breathing and swallowing, and hoarseness and tightness in the chest. Allergic reactions can be life-threatening, so if you experience any of these symptoms, stop taking Microgestine and contact your doctor.

Serious Side Effects

Some of the side effects that Microgestine can cause are very serious. Microgestine can increase your risk of developing blood clots. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience numbness or weakness on one side of your body (which can indicate a stroke) or confusion, vision problems and a severe pain behind your eyes, which can also indicate a blood clot in your brain. Other side effects include chest pain, and even a heart attack. If you experience any of these side effects, seek medical assistance immediately.
