Pilates uses muscle control and endurance to works the abdominals, back, hips and legs. This form of exercise was developed by Joseph Pilates around the early 1900s. Machines, such as the Pilates Reformer, promise to enhance the workout. Other choices include the Pilates Chair, Barrel and Cadillac. Each machine has its own methodology and service level. Talk to your doctor if you are new to Pilates to ensure that it is an appropriate option for you.

The Reformer

The Pilates Reformer is one way to learn the various movements in an assisted fashion. A 2008 study by University College London found that utilizing the Reformer did improve activation of the abdominal muscles. In other words, the middle worked harder while exercising on the machine compared with conventional, unassisted Pilates. According to DePaul University, you can do more than 100 exercises using the Pilates Reformer. The device has a sliding carriage that guides the moves and improves resistance.

The Pilates Chair

The Pilates Chair, or Wunda Chair, is a design created by Joseph Pilates to enhance his exercises. The Christ Hospital states that using the Wunda Chair will improve upper body strength and stability. The Pilates Chair has a padded surface with a pedal base and springs that increase resistance. The chair includes adjustable handles on each side that rise up for various moves. According to The Christ Hospital, by using the handlebars, you can change the pitch of a pushup and even perform the exercise in midair.

The High Barrel

The High Barrel is a tool that improves flexibility and stretching. Essentially, the barrel consists of a padded arch surface sitting on a wooden stand. Maneuvers are performed over the top of the arc. This flexes the spine and enhances stretching. The Christ Hospital states the working out on the High Barrel centers the core and puts less stress on joints. Your body weight is balanced for each exercise.

The Cadillac

The Pilates Cadillac, or Trapeze Table, is a complex structure that uses springs, a table base and overhead bars to enhance resistance. In some ways, the Cadillac is a teaching device. The goal is to perfect a single movement on the machine before moving on to other Pilates exercises. Christ Hospital reports thathet Trapeze Table teaches a straight leg roll, Swan, Cat, Mermaid, Hip Opener, Twist and other advanced Pilates moves. This device allows a student to learn the correct positioning and technique to get the most out of each exercise.
