The Fat Flush diet, created by Ann Louise Gittleman, consists of three phases. The first phase, which is highly restrictive, lasts for two weeks and is designed to flush away toxins from the body. The second phase increases the daily calorie intake from 1,200 calories to 1,500 calories, and is intended to last as long as it takes for a person to reach his desired weight. The third and final phase is designed to last indefinitely, and is viewed as more of a lifestyle than a weight-loss plan. Always talk to your doctor or dietitian before going on any diet program.

Step 1

Read the Fat Flush diet book by Ann Louise Gittleman. Not only will you better understand the principles behind the diet, but the book offers many meal plans and tips that may make the diet easier.

Step 2

Go grocery shopping. The Fat Flush diet requires pure cranberry juice, ground flaxseed, flaxseed oil, psyllium, high-protein whey powder and lemons. You also should stock up on protein sources, such as eggs, lean beef, chicken and fish, as well as plenty of fruits and vegetables. The plan also recommended thermogenic spices, such as cayenne, ginger, cinnamon and mustard.

Step 3

Prepare for the diet at least one week in advance. The Fat Flush Plan recommends drinking two glasses of water in between meals and eliminating all trans fats from your diet. Also eliminate all "whites" from your diet, including white sugar, white bread and white rice. Gradually eliminate all coffee, tea, soda and alcohol from your diet during this preparation week as well.

Step 4

Begin Phase 1. Each day, consume 1 tbsp. of flaxseed oil and eight glasses of water with a splash of pure cranberry juice. Two of these glasses of cranberry water, taken once in the morning and once at night, should include either a full teaspoon of powdered psyllium husks or 1 tbsp. of ground flaxseeds. Eat up to 8 oz. of lean protein, up to two omega-3-enriched eggs, two portions of fruit and an unlimited amount of vegetables, but only select from those listed in the book. Drink an 8-oz. cup of hot water with lemon juice before breakfast, take a multivitamin and take supplements rich in GLA or an equivalent, such as evening primrose oil or borage oil. The plan also recommends supplements such as dandelion root, milk thistle, chromium, l-carnitine, methionin, inositol, lecithin and lipase.

Step 5

Transition into Phase 2. Replace the cranberry water from Phase 1 with purified spring or bottled water. Gradually add up to two healthy carbohydrates to your diet. Remain in this phase as long as it takes for you to reach your desired weight.

Step 6

Continue with Phase 3. Gradually add more healthy carbohydrates and dairy products. Eat only one protein at each meal, with the exception of eggs which can be added to any meal. Do not eat fruits and vegetables together. Also, avoid eating milk and meat together. Refrain from consuming more than 2,000 mg of sodium in a day. Take 1,000-mg of a conjugated linoleic acid supplement three times a day to maintain fat loss.

Tips and Warnings

  • Although you can purchase all of the required supplements separately at your local drugstore or health food store, it may be easier or more cost effective to purchase the Fat Flush supplements directly from the website.
  • Although many will lose weight on this diet, it is most likely due to the low calorie intake and not due to your liver burning fat. Talk to your doctor or dietitian if you have any specific questions about the way this diet works. Always talk to a doctor or nutritionist before beginning any type of restrictive diet program, including the Fat Flush diet. Determine if any adjustments need to be made to the Fat Flush diet, based on your current medical situation. The restrictive calorie limits of this diet may not be appropriate for all individuals, particularly men. Vegans or vegetarians may also have a difficult time with this diet, due to the focus on animal-based protein foods.
