Eating a healthy diet will provide you with energy, good eyesight, endurance, and healthy teeth, bones, skin and hair. A healthy diet, which provides several vitamins and minerals, is needed for every part of the body, including the hair. Good circulation, hydration, good levels of protein and antioxidants are all required for a strong body and healthy hair.
Balanced Diet
A healthy and balanced diet consists of whole grains, protein, fruits, vegetables and dairy. Whole grains, which make up the bulk of a healthy diet, contain dietary fiber, which works to regulate digestion, lower blood cholesterol and balance blood sugar. Irregular blood sugar levels can contribute to weight gain and diabetes. In addition, irregular blood sugar levels can cause overall hair thinning.
A diet rich in fruit and vegetables can provide you with many of the vitamins and minerals needed to ward off diseases and keep the immune system in check. Protein sources such as legumes, nuts and poultry contain minerals such as iron and potassium, which are needed to fuel muscles and ensure good blood circulation. Protein is also needed to regulate hormones and for muscle growth. Dairy is recommended as a way to gain much-needed calcium, which is used for strong bones and teeth and also to prevent osteoporosis.
Exercise
A healthy head of hair requires good circulation. The hair follicles rely on good blood circulation and will weaken if there are disruptions in circulation. A lack of exercise can also increase the likelihood of catching illnesses. A weakened immune system makes you more susceptible to bacterial and viral infections. Hair loss can occur as a result of a ravaged immune system or a long period of illness.
Hydration
Staying hydrated enables vitamins and minerals to circulate in the body and also for organs to function properly. The skin also needs proper hydration or it can become dry and itchy; this includes the scalp. If the scalp becomes too dry, hair loss can occur. The MayoClinic recommends drinking eight or nine cups of water per day to ward off dehydration.
Vitamins
Vitamins are necessary for good hair growth. B-complex vitamins B-1 and B-2 are required for healthy hair and good hair growth. Foods that contain these vitamins include enriched grains, soy milk, watermelon, cheese and milk. B-complex vitamins B1 and B2 also help keep skin and nails healthy. Biotin is also required for healthy hair growth and is found in whole grains, organ meats, egg yolks and soybeans. All of these vitamins can be purchased in multivitamin form or as individual supplements in a pharmacy or grocery store.
