Dr. Alwin Lewis of Burbank, California, created the Five Bite Diet. Lewis published his book, "Why Weight Around? Changing the Weight Loss Strategy," in 2007. The book explains in detail how you can benefit from Lewis' diet. The strategy used in the Five Bite Diet is comparable to the same type of diet that a gastric bypass patient would utilize, according to Lewis, but in this diet, there's no need for stomach surgery.
How It Works
When following the Five Bite Diet, you can eat anything you like, but only five bites. You can only consume beverages that do not contain calories. Lewis also stresses the importance of consuming protein each day. Protein is a very important part of your diet because your muscles need protein on a daily basis.
Theory
The premise of the Five Bite Diet is that it is supposed to help teach you how to control what you're putting into your mouth and keep you from overeating. Once you reach your goal weight, you can resume normal eating habits.
What's Recommended
On the Five Bite Diet, you do not eat any breakfast. According to Lewis, it's OK to have just a black cup of coffee for breakfast, then five bites of food for lunch and five for dinner. Because the theory behind the Five Bite Diet is to help you learn portion control, Dr. Lewis recommends eating a candy bar for lunch and dinner. He says this is the perfect portion size that you should consume while on the Five Bite Diet. Lewis also recommends taking a multivitamin while on the Five Bite Diet, to ensure that your body receives all the vitamins and minerals it needs.
Considerations
The Five Bite Diet is considered a very low-calorie diet, or VLCD, and is not recommended for long periods of time or if you have certain medical conditions, such as malabsorption problems. Ask your doctor for approval prior to beginning the Five Bite Diet. Your health care provider might wish to monitor your health while on the diet, if he approves of the diet, and make sure that all of your nutritional needs are met.
