Accutane is a potent oral medication used for the treatment of severe, nodular or uncontrolled acne on the skin. Acne is common in teenagers and adults and may not respond to antibiotics and other treatments. Accutane contains isotretinoin, a concentrated form of vitamin A, which works by decreasing sebum or oil production in the skin glands.
There are several types of weightlifting supplements. Some of these may contain multivitamins and natural or synthetic steroids for muscle enhancement and strength. These supplements should not be taken with Accutane, as they can worsen side effects and cause interactions and hormonal fluctuations which can worsen acne. Consult your doctor about taking Accutane and discuss all the medications and supplements you are taking.
Step 1
Consult your doctor about taking Accutane for severe or uncontrolled acne on the face or body. Take a pregnancy test before beginning a course of this medication. Use two forms of birth control or abstain from sexual activity while you are taking Accutane.
Step 2
Take one to two capsules of Accutane as prescribed per day. The daily dosage of this medication is 10, 20 or 40 mg. Higher doses may be prescribed in rare cases, or your doctor may increase the dosage after you have taken it for some time. Consume this medication by swallowing the capsule whole with a glass of water. Accutane can be taken with or without food.
Step 3
Do not take more than the prescribed dose of Accutane. It may take up to two months to see the benefits of this medication. You may need an additional course of Accutane for up to six months at a time. Do not take weightlifing supplements with Accutane, as they may interfere with the benefits or cause additional side effects.
Tips and Warnings
- Accutane contains high doses of a vitamin A derivative. Avoid taking vitamin A or multivitamin supplements with this medication as it may increase side effects. Weightlifting supplements may also contain vitamins and should not be consumed while you are taking Accutane. If you would like to being taking weightlifting supplements after completing this medication, consult your doctor to determine if it is safe for you to do so. Some types of weightlifting supplements contain steroids that can cause hormonal imbalances and worsen acne.
- Accutane cannot be taken by women who are pregnant, or who may become pregnant while taking this medication. There is a very high risk of birth defects caused by the high dosage of isotretinoin in Accutane. If you become pregnant while taking Accutane, immediately stop the medication and see your doctor. This medication is also linked to several side effects, including dry, cracked skin and lips, sun sensitivity, decreased night vision and flank or side pain. Weightlifting supplements and other vitamins and supplements should not be taken in conjunction with Accutane, as they may increase side effects or cause interactions with this potent medication.
