Gum disease can cause slight inflammation or redness that can progress to pain, bleeding and the loss of teeth. This disease is common and can occur due to genetics, nutrition and poor dental health. Treatment usually includes medicated mouthwashes and toothpastes, regular flossing and professional cleaning of the teeth and gums by a dentist. Tea tree oil is a popular natural remedy for gum disease and dental health because of its potent antiseptic and anti-bacterial properties. Oregano oil also has similar qualities, though it is not popularly used for gum disease and oral health. However, the regular use of both of these essential oils may help prevent gum disease from occurring or worsening.
Step 1
Note that tea tree essential oil is used in commercial dental products, such as toothpastes and mouthwashes for gum health. Oregano oil is not typically used for this purpose, though it has similar antiseptic, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal qualities. However, in both cases, there is not sufficient medical research to confirm that these essential oils will treat gum disease.
Step 2
Add tea tree oil that is suitable for oral use directly to your toothbrush and massage it into the gums. Leave it on for up to 30 seconds, and rinse with warm water. Add a few drops of tea tree oil to your regular toothpaste and mouthwash. Brush your teeth using a soft-bristled toothbrush at least three times a day, and use the mouthwash at twice a day. Do not swallow the tea tree oil.
Step 3
Make your own mouthwash by combining 1 cup of distilled water with 7 to 8 drops of tea tree oil. Use at least twice a day, swishing it around your mouth and gums before spitting it into the sink. Do not rinse the mouth. Do not swallow the mouthwash. Store any leftover mouthwash in a tightly sealed bottle in the fridge.
Step 4
Purchase pure oregano oil. Wash your hands thoroughly and place 2 to 3 drops on your finger and massage the oil directly onto your gums. Let it sit for 30 seconds before rinsing your mouth with warm water. Alternatively, add a few drops of oregano oil to your toothpaste and mouthwash.
Tips and Warnings
- Make sure that the oregano oil you buy is actually oregano. In many cases, commercial oregano oil is derived from other spice plants such as marjoram and thyme, which do not have the same medicinal qualities. Purchase tea tree oil and oregano oil from a health-food store to ensure that it is high quality and safe to use in the mouth.
- Gum disease can lead to tooth and bone loss if left untreated. Consult your dentist about your oral health before self-treating. Essential oils such as tea tree oil and oregano oil can be used to prevent this disease from occurring or in conjunction with other prescribed treatments. Do not swallow essential oils as toxicity may result.
