Steppers are a type of exercise machine that simulates that act of stair climbing. Types of steppers include full-sized motorized versions and smaller manual models. Steppers can be purchased through sporting goods stores or large chain retailers. Unlike elliptical machines, steppers only focus on the muscles of the lower body.

Types

The two main types of steppers are motorized and manual versions. Motorized steppers are typically larger and require an electrical outlet to operate. An interior motor is used to control the speed and motion of the steps. For a manual stepper, you'll need less room and typically do not need to plug in the unit. Air pressure is used to control the stepping motion.

Features

When choosing a stair stepper, pick a durable model. The steppers can take a beating during workouts. Versions with hydraulic shocks have a tendency to last longer than brands with pneumatic shocks, according to the Men's Total Fitness website. Adjustable resistance models allow you more control of the difficulty of the workout, while magnetic resistance stair steppers have smoother and more fluid resistance changes.

Considerations

Ideally, you should have access to a stable platform to stay balanced while using the stepper. Mini steppers typically include only the pedals and no handles. You will also not usually have access to a console that tracks resistance, speed, calories and other information about your workout.

Usage

To use a stepper, stand upright on the foot pedals and maintain good posture. Move your legs up and down at a steady pace as if you are climbing a flight of stairs. Keep your hands moving in time with your steps or rest them with a light touch against the hand rails. To stop the workout, allow the steps to completely decompress to the floor. Step off slowly while keeping a hand on the rails. Steppers do not have an emergency shut-off option like treadmills.
