Flatulence, the medical term for passing gas, occurs when intestinal gas is expelled from your digestive tract through your anus. Gas may accumulate in your digestive system in two principal ways: when you swallow air when eating or drinking and when you digest food. Herbal remedies may be an effective method of treating intestinal gas and flatulence. However, you should avoid using herbs for this purpose until you have discussed herb-related topics with your family physician.

Intestinal Gas Information

Intestinal gas is extremely common and everybody experiences it to some degree. Expelling intestinal gas is a normal biological process, and the U.K.'s National Health Service notes that it may occur up to 25 times per day in men and 12 times per day in women. Certain foods are known to cause intestinal gas and flatulence, including lentils, beans, fructose and sorbitol, and dairy products containing lactose. In many cases, excessive flatulence may be controlled by changing certain diet and lifestyle habits.

Herbal Solutions

Some herbal remedies may help reduce your flatulence and its accompanying symptoms, including abdominal pain or discomfort. The University of Maryland Medical Center touts several herbal solutions that have historically been used in treating this sometimes embarrassing condition. Herbal solutions for flatulence may include green tea, Roman chamomile, peppermint, lemon balm, dandelion and turmeric. Not all these herbs have been subjected to rigorous clinical studies to examine their efficacy. Always use caution when ingesting herbs.

A Commonly Used Herb

Roman chamomile is a commonly used herb in the treatment of intestinal gas and flatulence. The University of Maryland Medical Center notes that Roman chamomile has traditionally been used in treating excessive intestinal gas, indigestion, nausea and vomiting. MedlinePlus states that the flower heads of the Roman chamomile plant are used in herbal supplements and that this herb may help treat pain and swelling associated with sinus pain and joint disorders. This herb may be ingested or used topically, depending on the condition.

Additional Information

Because there are many possible causes of excessive flatulence, you should visit your doctor to better understand the underlying causes of your intestinal gas and what you can do to treat the condition. Herbal remedies may be a helpful adjunct therapy in treating your excessive flatulence, although not all herbs used for this condition may be backed by rigorous scientific studies. Herbal remedies should always be used with caution, as some herbs may cause undesired side effects in certain individuals.
