As soon as that winter chill begins to fade, department stores everywhere start to pull out their warmer weather clothing. Among these sleeveless shirts, shorts and skorts, you'll see the swimsuits. For many plus-sized women, this can be a daunting time. Larger ladies often find it difficult to find flattering swimsuits.

The Right Fit

The most flattering swimsuit for the full figured woman is one that fits correctly. Too tight a suit will result in bulging while too roomy a suit will create the illusion of larger size. A good plus-sized swimsuit will fit snugly over all areas, including the bust, stomach and hips without pressing too tightly into the skin. Take accurate measurements to ensure you are looking for the correct size. Many plus-sized girls opt for a tankini or other two-piece style ensure getting the best fit on top and bottom.

Flatter Natural Shape

All plus-sized girls are not all the same. A full-figured woman may have a small top with large hips or may have a large top and narrower hips. Still others may have an hourglass shape with somewhat equal top and bottom proportions. It is important to choose a swimsuit that flatters the particular shape a women has. For instance, girls who are heavier on the bottom might consider a halter top, coupled with a scoop bottom. Women who are larger on top may opt for a boy-short bottom or high-cut leg bottom to emphasize their lower body. Plus-sized girls with hourglass figures should look for symmetric suits with a sideways drape to highlight the waist.

Built-in Support

Plus-sized women often want extra support in their swimsuits to give them a more toned look. Many swimsuits today come with tummy control panels, built-in underwire bras and other support features to provide extra confidence. Women who have ample bosoms should consider purchasing a bra-type bathing suit top. These tops are sized similarly to brasseries so you can select your exact size.

Color and Patterns

Larger women do not have to stick to the basic black swimsuit. Plus-sized women should consider bold, solid colors as well some bright patterns. Keep in mind that a solid-colored top and patterned bottom will emphasize your lower body; a patterned top and solid bottom will draw the eyes upward to the chest. Look for symmetrical patterns and bright, bold colors for a girl with an hourglass shape.
