The Master Cleanse, also known as the Lemonade Diet, is a detox program created by the late Stanley Burroughs. The Master Cleanse was initially designed with the intention to help the body rid itself of impurities, while giving the digestive system a chance to rest, however it's now widely used for its weight loss benefits. The cleanse consists of fresh organic lemon juice, maple syrup, distilled or purified water and cayenne pepper and although some claim it's safe to do for 30 days plus, an article on the official Master Cleanse website suggests 10 to 14 days is sufficient unless you are doing a disease cleansing program. There are no hard or fast rules about exercising with the Master Cleanse, although light cardio exercises can help your circulatory system release toxins to enhance detoxifying benefits.

Master Cleanse Detox Symptoms

Your body receives very small amounts of vitamins and minerals while on the Master Cleanse, and you may feel very tired for the first few days until your body adjusts. As toxins release you may experience a range of symptoms such as lightheadedness, headaches, irritability, mental and physical fatigue, a sore throat, runny nose, congestion, muscle aches, flu like symptoms and skin irritations. Your energy levels may fluctuate, feeling exhausted one day and energized the next. You can exercise when your energy levels are high, however, don't overdo it and drink plenty of water. This will keep you hydrated and help flush toxins from your system.

Weight Training

Avoid strenuous exercises like weight and endurance training as you will not be getting any proteins during the detox. Muscle fibers are broken down during strenuous exercise routines, and protein is vital to repair and rebuild muscle tissue. The Better Health Channel explained that about 50 percent of the body's weight is made up of protein, also adding that the recommended daily intake for adult males is around 0.84 g/kg and 0.75 g/kg for adult women, depending on your health, age and weight. It's important to consume the recommended daily intake of proteins, especially when doing weights and endurance training, as your body cannot store it.

Light Cardio

Light cardio workouts such as walking, dancing, yoga and tai chi are good to do on the Master Cleanse. These are not too taxing on your body and will help your circulatory system release excessive toxins and impurities. Exercise also stimulates the release of endorphins, which are neurotransmitters produced in your brain to relieve pain, make you feel happy and lower your stress levels.

Listen to Your Body

Although there are general Master Cleanse symptoms, the level and intensity of discomfort will vary depending on how much toxins your body needs to release. You should always listen to your body in deciding if and when to exercise. Contact your general practitioner if you have any serious medical conditions before starting a Master Cleanse detox program, and follow the necessary steps to safely and correctly ease in and ease out of the cleanse.
